Every share on your EVO can be configured using one of a few different "modes." Each of these modes exists in EVO specifically to offer a higher level of functionality with various professional media applications like Premiere Pro and Avid Media Composer.
Because such applications are continuously updated and new features are added by their manufacturers, our recommendations on which Mode to use may change.
The NAS & Project Sharing page in your EVO GUI lists the available modes for each of your shares as well as some general recommendations. This article details our current NLE-specific recommendations, and you'll find more information in the ShareBrowser guide, available from the Help link within its interface.
Avid: Unlocked
The ShareBrowser Client software provides Avid file system emulation on the client, so there is no need for a permission-restrictive mode on the EVO.
Adobe Premiere or After Effects: Project Locking (or Unlocked if Adobe provides locking)
The EVO will watch for write access to Adobe project files on the network shares and automatically lock them. The ShareBrowser software allows users to manage these locks from their workstations.
Depending on the configuration, Adobe may also provide its own project locking, in which case it is not required on EVO, and the Unlocked mode should be used.
Final Cut Pro: Project Locking
More than one approach is possible for FCP X in a shared environment with EVO. Each method provides the Project Locking option, which should be chosen in order for user-specific locks to be displayed and managed by ShareBrowser.
Libraries are consolidated by default, but projects and media can be separated, allowing the media to be stored on a high-bandwidth volume, while the smaller project files are available for sharing on an NFS volume.
This has historically been the preferred method for a shared Final Cut workflow, but it is now possible to instead use the SMB protocol, which allows all content to be stored on a single network share.
Pro Tools: Project Locking
The EVO will watch for write access to Pro Tools project files on the network shares and automatically lock them. The ShareBrowser software allows users to manage these locks from their workstations.
Da Vinci Resolve: Unlocked or Locked
In the Unlocked mode, all users have R/W access. In the Locked mode, new files and folders will be assigned full permissions for the creator and read only for everyone else. The creator can use ShareBrowser Desktop Client or the EVO File Navigator and manually “release” their files or folders so that another user can be the new owner, or so that others can also read/write.
All other applications: Project Locking
EVO has a default list of file types for which it will automatically apply the project locking rules, but this list can be customized at any time. Any number of file types can be added to the file masking list, so that the same locking behavior can be applied to Photoshop, Microsoft Office applications, or any other collaborative workflow where it would be beneficial to protect specific file types.
